Apply for the SPLC's New Voices Student Leaders Institute

The following is a release from the Student Press Law Center:

Applications for the 2023 New Voices Student Leaders Institute are now open!  Applications are considered on a rolling basis, so please encourage any future New Voices leader you know to apply today. The application form is here (and we are NOT asking advisers to fill out recommendation forms this year!!).

The Student Press Law Center is proud to host the annual New Voices Student Leaders Institute, a free online program for high school students to improve their leadership and organizing skills, develop their role as leaders within the New Voices movement, and identify the best strategy to expand student press freedom in their communities.

Participants in the all-online program will be joined by SPLC staff, New Voices leaders, and special guests to learn their unique capacity as organizers, deepen their understanding of civics, lobbying and press freedom, and expand their ability to act as advocates. By the end of the Institute, Student Leaders will identify the pressing needs in their state and local communities and the unique ways in which students can respond, as well as possess the tools necessary to combat these challenges.

The Institute will run from July 11-20, and participants should expect to participate from Tuesday – Thursday from 1pm-4pm Eastern/10am-1pm Pacific time, with optional sessions until 5pm Eastern/2pm Pacific.

Participation in the Institute is free, but students will commit to serve as student leaders in the New Voices movement during the 2023-2024 advocacy year.

Applicants must be in high school during the 2023-2024 school year. Applicants from states without New Voices laws are prioritized, but students from all states are welcome.
