Student Ambassador Showcase: Allen Liu

GSPA is proud to highlight the amazing work of one of our GSPA Ambassadors, Allen Liu, a junior at Northview High School.

Putting the spotlight on our GSPA ambassadors allows them to showcase their published work and skills.

Hi! My name is Allen Liu, and I am a junior at Northview High School and the Copy Editor for The Messenger, our school’s newsmagazine and website. As a GSPA ambassador, I aim to be a dependable and approachable resource for student journalists across Georgia, offering practical insight and experience. Outside of journalism, I enjoy playing tennis, hiking, and eating at new restaurants.

I selected these three articles because each represents journalism that is timely, relevant, and impactful in a different way. The walkout protest piece captures the immediacy of student voice and civic engagement, covering a complex and potentially polarizing issue. The feature on autism addresses stigma and misconceptions, highlighting lived experiences. The budget feature connects policy decisions to tangible effects on students, showing how broader systems directly shape daily school life. Together, these stories demonstrate the meaning of journalism: breaking news, human-centered storytelling, and policy analysis, all rooted in informing and empowering a student audience.

Serving as a GSPA Ambassador has strengthened both my leadership and communication skills. It has pushed me to think beyond my own publication and consider how to support student journalists across the state. I’ve become more intentional in how I give feedback, share resources, and model ethical reporting. The role has also reinforced the importance of collaboration, that journalism improves when we exchange ideas and learn from one another. Overall, it has made me more confident not just as a writer, but as a mentor and representative of student media.

I hope my work encourages students to engage critically with the world around them. Whether covering social issues, school policy, or community events, I want readers to feel informed and respected. I also hope my reporting helps normalize thoughtful dialogue around complex topics, especially those that can be misunderstood or oversimplified. Ultimately, my goal is for student journalism to strengthen community awareness and demonstrate that student voices are capable of serious, responsible reporting.
