Three Georgia high school students involved with the Student Press Law Center’s New Voices Student Leaders Institute helped to advance New Voices bills during this past regular session of the Georgia House of Representatives.

According to the Student Press Law Center (SPLC), HB 1561 and HB 1592 were introduced with bi-partisan support and were both cited as the “Student Journalist Press Freedom Restoration Act.” The SPLC reports that while the bills did not move past the House Committee on Higher Education, advocates say they will continue their work when the new regular session convenes.

SPLC New Voices Student Leaders from Georgia included Betty Jane Plitt, McIntosh High School; Izabelle Jones, Richmond Hill High School; and Zelda Lerner, Midtown High School.

Several students have represented the state of Georgia in the Institute every year since 2021.
