Two-hundred fifty high school journalists and teachers learned about ways they can put purpose at the center of their media programs during the 2022 GSPA Spring Awards ceremony on April 11, 2022, at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Keynote speaker Keysha Lee, an award-winning show host and filmmaker, businesswoman and author, delivered the inspiring message. She defined purpose as “a sense that the work you’re doing is deeply needed.”

Adviser of the Year recognizes a journalism adviser who goes beyond the “call of duty” in supporting his or her staff.

GSPA and its members from across the state will celebrate the best in scholastic journalism at the 2022 Spring Workshop and Awards. The event will be held at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education on Monday, April 11. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. A workshop will lead the event, 9-11:45 a.m., followed by an awards luncheon at noon, catered by the Georgia Center. Professional dress is suggested. Register here.

Melissa Liu, co-editor-in-chief for The Messenger newspaper at Northview High School in Johns Creek, Georgia, has been named the 2022 Georgia Champion Journalist of the Year by the Georgia Scholastic Press Association and the Journalism Education Association.

Winter Conference attendees explored the theme of “Reflection” through the On-the-Spot Photography contest.

Students showcased their experiences at the Winter Conference on Feb. 10, 2022 through the On-the-Spot Social Media Contest. Posts were featured on Instagram and Twitter in a variety of ways.

Seniors and juniors are invited to enter the Georgia Champion Journalist and Junior Journalist of the Year contests. Entrants must create a comprehensive online portfolio to showcase their best journalistic pieces, skills and achievements. There are no entry fees for either of these contests. All completed entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 23, 2022. This year’s contests feature increased monetary prizes!

GSPA is now accepting entries for the 2022 First Amendment Essay Competition. As an essential part of our democracy, the press and education, the First Amendment remains an important area of study and review. Students should write 300-500 words addressing the new prompt for 2022.

The Georgia Scholastic Press Association is proud to announce the 2020-21 Literary Magazine and Yearbook Contest winners. During another challenging year, students and advisers still found creative ways to tell their communities' stories and publish award-worthy work. Congratulations to all!

Ambassadors promote GSPA in their schools and communities, serve as liaisons who strengthen communication between their high school media programs and GSPA , and act as leaders who bring new ideas to scholastic media. We look forward to working with this highly talented group of seven students.

Join the University of Georgia School of Law First Amendment Clinic for a presentation on prior review and prior restraint of student journalists who create content for their school-sponsored media. The presentation on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. will cover what these practices are, why they discourage student discussion of important topics, and how we can work towards eliminating these practices in school-sponsored media.

GSPA will recognize the hard work of yearbook and literary magazine staffs during a virtual awards program Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 4 p.m. The celebration will feature General Excellence competition rankings and Individual Award winners from the summer 2021 contests.
